Nyakume Thor also known as "Kume" is a certified medical assistant and nurse assistant at Regions Hospital's Specialty Burn Unit. With an associate’s degree in science from Des Moines Area Community College, kume is also advancing her education by pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Rasmussen University.
Kume passions for higher education is indicated through resilient and commitment of nonstops in medical field right before the COVID-19 pandemic. Kume quickly noticed the lack of representation for her community and young women who look like her, while growing up in America; this has fueled kume determination to seek out higher education in the medical fields and at the same time explore other opportunities.
Outside of work and studies, kume enjoy spending time outdoors, taking long walks, practicing yoga, and indulging in some therapeutic shopping and cultivating new hobbies that later become habits. She express herself creatively through writing poetry, songs, and short stories.
Kume bring a unique skills to this generation as a volunteer coordinator for NPN, her invaluable contribution to reach out to the community and bring forth people in our community to share on the work we do is unmistakable. Through her work, people from different background can share in doing the greater good for change and bring together community.
As a volunteer coordinator, Civic engagement is the cornerstone of a thriving community, driving collective efforts to address challenges and promote change. At NPN, we see active participation in civic life as an opportunity to empower individuals and build a stronger, more resilient community. By volunteering, advocating, and serving, we bridge gaps, raise awareness, and make a lasting impact, ensuring all voices are heard. Cultivating a culture of civic engagement is essential to NPN mission of empowering the South Sudanese community and beyond.
